Learn about our data sources
Free identification and paid history come from different providers. We keep those layers separate so you know what you are getting.
Full data sources pageLayer 01
Free vehicle specifications
Decoded from the VIN using available manufacturer and NHTSA vPIC identification data. This layer covers identity and specs — not accident, title, or ownership history.
Layer 02
License plate resolution
US plate + state → VIN uses a commercial plate-to-VIN provider when configured. Credentials stay on the server and are never exposed in the browser.
Layer 03
Full vehicle history
Title, accidents, mileage, salvage, theft, registration, and sales/auction records come from a separate paid history provider — not invented from NHTSA decode data. STATEVIN is not a government website.
