Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about free VIN identification, paid history reports, license plate lookup, and why record coverage varies by vehicle.

Common questions

STATEVIN is an independent vehicle information service — not a government website.

What is a VIN check?
A VIN check uses a vehicle's 17-character identification number to identify manufacturer-reported specifications and, when a full report is purchased, to retrieve available history records associated with that vehicle. Free identification covers specs such as year, make, and model. History categories such as title or accident records require a separate full report and depend on available data sources.
Is the basic VIN lookup free?
Yes. STATEVIN provides a free vehicle identification layer that validates the VIN and returns available specification data such as year, make, model, body style, and engine information. Full vehicle history reports are a separate paid product.
What does a vehicle history report include?
Depending on the plan you choose (Essential, Complete, or Ultimate) and available records, a report may include title information, reported accidents, odometer readings, salvage or total-loss records, theft records, ownership or registration history, recall data, sales or auction activity, and vehicle specifications. Not every vehicle has the same depth of records.
What's the difference between Essential, Complete and Ultimate?
Essential covers core vehicle-history research. Complete is designed for buyers wanting broader history — including ownership and detailed timelines. Ultimate includes the maximum available supported data STATEVIN offers. Available records still vary by vehicle.
Can I search using a license plate?
Yes. Enter a US license plate together with its issuing state. Where supported, the plate is resolved to a VIN and then decoded for vehicle identification. Plate coverage varies and may not be available for every plate.
Why do I need the state with a license plate?
License plate numbers are issued by individual states and are not unique nationwide. Providing the issuing state is required to correctly identify the associated vehicle.
Where can I find my VIN?
Common locations include the dashboard near the windshield (visible from outside), the driver-side door jamb sticker, vehicle registration documents, and insurance paperwork.
How quickly can I access a report?
After a successful purchase, reports are typically available online for immediate review. Exact timing can vary based on checkout completion and data retrieval. You can also download a PDF and receive email delivery.
Does every vehicle have the same amount of history?
No. Record coverage varies by vehicle age, location, prior reporting, and data sources. Some vehicles have extensive reported history; others have limited or incomplete records. STATEVIN presents available information and does not guarantee that every category will contain data for every VIN.
What vehicles can STATEVIN identify?
STATEVIN is designed for modern US vehicles with a standard 17-character VIN. Identification quality depends on manufacturer-reported data. License plate search is limited to US plates with a known issuing state where plate-to-VIN resolution is supported.
